Comfort from Scripture on World Mental Health Day

In 2025, we all know someone, or have ourselves been affected by, some kind of mental health battle. While that may seem like an exaggeration, in reality, 1 in every 8 people in the world live with a mental disorder, with most not having access to effective care. Staring at these stats can leave us feeling powerless, lost in how to find help for ourselves or for others who need it. Where can we turn for hope, and what comfort can we know to be true for rising mental health struggles?

In honor of World Mental Health Day, we’ve gathered a few resources to make accessing compassionate care for the mental health of you or your loved ones as easy as possible. We’ll also turn to the constant truth of Scripture to carry us through the brokenness we face in this world.

The ultimate lie that pervades our lowest mental health days is the whisper that we are alone, that God does not see us, or that He leaves us in the middle of our pain.

As believers, we know that nothing is further from the truth. But if we’re being honest, those lies can sneak in even on our best days. And there’s no shame in that—it’s just the fallout of being separated from our perfect God because of the sin and brokenness that pervade. Our thoughts and feelings are certainly real and need to be voiced, processed, and cared for. But what we cannot do is believe that every critical thought, negative emotion, or mental struggle that comes our way is speaking truth to us.

The good news for us in those moments? Our faith in Christ has the chance to truly shine brightest when the darkness seems to overwhelm. While we ache for the sunny days, we are compelled to cling to Jesus more fervently and humbly when we come to the end of our own strength. We have Jesus’s life as proof that what He says is fully true and always good. We have His death and resurrection as evidence that His love is stronger than any pain or suffering. And we have His ascension as confirmation that He is alive and reigning over all until He comes again.

As we wait, He has given us multiple places in Scripture to comfort, encourage, and provide glimpses of His heart for us. Here are a few of our favorites, and we’d love to know what verses have been meaningful to you in times of trouble.

Happy are you, O Israel! Who is like you,
a people saved by the Lord,
the shield of your help,
and the sword of your triumph!
Your enemies shall come fawning to you,
and you shall tread upon their backs.

–Deuteronomy 33:29

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you.
For I am the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
I give Egypt as your ransom,
Cush and Seba in exchange for you.

–Isaiah 43:2-3

So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.

–John 16:22

And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.

–Colossians 2:13-15
