Understanding the Christian Health Sharing Model: A Clear Visual Guide

Affordable Health Care USA

Christian health sharing is built on a simple yet meaningful concept: faith-driven families and individuals coming together to share eligible medical expenses within a like-minded community. While this approach to managing healthcare has existed for decades, it can feel unfamiliar at first, especially for those encountering a Christian health sharing ministry for the first time.

This infographic provides a clear, approachable overview of how the Christian health sharing model works, from shared beliefs to the process of sharing eligible medical needs. Designed as a shareable visual guide, it breaks down key elements of health sharing in a way that’s easy to understand and easy to share.

What is Christian Health Sharing?

At its core, Christian health sharing brings together Members who agree with a shared Statement of Faith and commit to living healthy, ethical lives. Members voluntarily contribute a Monthly Contribution Amount, which is combined with other Members’ contributions to help share eligible medical needs according to established Membership Guidelines.

Rather than operating as an insurance product, health sharing functions through shared responsibility, mutual care, and trust. Members take an active role in their healthcare decisions while participating in a community that values stewardship, transparency, and compassion.

The Foundation of Christian Health Sharing

Christian health sharing is rooted in biblical principles and shared beliefs. Members agree to live in ways that honor God, care for their health responsibly, and support one another with compassion and integrity.

This foundation shapes the entire experience. Prayer, encouragement, and community connection are integral parts of health sharing, reinforcing that the model is not only about addressing medical needs but also about walking alongside one another in faith.

How the Health Sharing Process Works

While details may vary from program to program and from ministry to ministry, the general process follows these steps:

1. Members join a health sharing ministry

Individuals and families apply for membership, agree with shared beliefs, and commit to the membership guidelines that govern how sharing works.

2. Members contribute monthly

Members voluntarily submit a Monthly Contribution Amount. These contributions are directed toward sharing eligible medical needs within the community.

3. Medical care is received

Members have access to a comprehensive provider network and receive medical services directly, maintaining personal responsibility for their healthcare decisions.

4. Medical needs are reviewed

When a medical bill is submitted, it is reviewed to determine what is eligible for sharing according to the membership guidelines.

5. Sharing is facilitated

If a medical need is deemed eligible, sharing may be facilitated among Members following program guidelines.

What Makes Health Sharing Distinct

Health sharing is shaped by several defining characteristics that set the model apart in how it functions:

  • Member-to-member sharing of eligible medical needs
  • Faith-based guidelines rooted in shared beliefs
  • Emphasis on personal responsibility and stewardship
  • Community prayer and encouragement alongside financial sharing
  • Guided by biblical principles of generosity, compassion, care and mutual responsibility
