If you’ve ever wondered how a health sharing ministry actually shares medical bills—and whether it can be trusted as much as traditional insurance—you’re not alone. As more Christians look for alternatives to rising healthcare costs, health sharing ministries have become an appealing, values-centered option. But understanding how these sharing ministries work is key to feeling confident in your choice.
A Community Built on Shared Faith and Shared Responsibility
Health sharing ministries like WeShare operate on the simple but powerful premise that Christians we should come together to care for one another’s needs. Instead of paying premiums to an insurance company, Members contribute a Monthly Contribution Amount that goes directly to an escrow account with one goal: help fellow Members with eligible medical expenses. We also send a monthly newsletter to every Member that outlines the previous month’s Member-to-Member sharing and all the good those monthly contributions were able to do.
This isn’t blind trust. It’s an intentional, biblically rooted commitment to participating in Jesus’s upside-down kingdom and prioritizing people over profit.
A Clear, Transparent Process Without Guesswork or Empty Promises
We don’t want to navigate vague fine print or unpredictable coverage rules, so we know you don’t either! Part of how WeShare has built a health sharing ministry on integrity and generosity is in our clear communication and simplified Sharing Programs. Each Sharing Program comes with specific, clearly outlined guidelines that let you know exactly how sharing works and what services are eligible.
Here’s how the process unfolds:
- Your monthly contribution is recorded and securely held.
WeShare tracks your contribution in an escrow-style account dedicated to the community’s eligible medical needs, not for corporate profits or administrative padding. - When you need medical care, you present your Member ID.
Members gain access to high-quality care through PHCS, the nation’s largest individual PPO network, helping ensure fair, competitive pricing for your visit. - You pay your Consult Fee, and your provider sends WeShare the bill.
No mystery charges and no surprises. We just want to save you from the hassle of a provider’s billing department and reimbursement nightmares! That Consult Fee is also only necessary for certain visits—many appointments are completely shareable! - WeShare reviews your bill according to your membership guidelines.
Remember those Program Guidelines we mentioned? Our Shareable Medical Bills team looks at the same exact document when they’re processing any bills from your provider. This is also when we apply your Annual Member Care Share—similar to a deductible—and determine what qualifies for sharing. - Eligible bills are shared and payments are sent directly to your provider.
You’ll receive an Explanation of Share that outlines what was shared and any remaining amount you’re responsible for, and our Member Services team is available to answer any questions you may have about that Explanation of Share. Those Program Guidelines also include a clear appeals process—that’s based on the principles taught in Matthew 18:15-20—if you still need to bring up anything that’s amiss.
A Different Way Forward with the Health Sharing Model
Trust isn’t built on clever marketing—it’s built by following through on the covenants we make with each other. At WeShare, we build confidence within our community by:
- Operating within clearly defined program guidelines
- Avoiding empty promises or ambiguous benefits language
- Keeping Members informed at every step
- Encouraging accountability through shared Christian values
- Prioritizing service over profit
For many believers, this model feels more aligned with our faith and more transparent than traditional insurance. When we share each other’s burdens, we create something stronger than a policy—we create a family. And that’s why the health sharing model continues to thrive: because it works, and because it honors what we believe.
